Sigrid Matejat, b. 1958
Textile designer Sigrid Matejat designs and manufactures wall decorations and space dividers in large dimensions, which often have dual applications. Her technique is double-weaving, which means weaving manually on a loom with a double warp. Essentially, this makes the work double-sided, explaining its suitability as spatial object (space divider, (folding) screen, installation).
The long shape and geometric design of ‘Colour grades' and ‘Square and rectangle' were inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh' Hillhouse Ladderback Chair, the famous chair with its elongated back. The works are suitable as space divider in high spaces. The front and back are different. The use of colours is subtle purple in many shades next to black and white (Colour Grades). In Square and Rectangle, lilac and hues of blue play a part. Some small squares are in relief.
‘Solution', selected for the thematic exhibition "The colour White" in 2003, serves best as space divider or against a dark background. The thick, stiff fabric at the bottom becomes more transparent, translucent as it goes up. Despite this thinness there is still a cohesive structure. The design plays with different nuances of thickness and transparency, of binding and solution, of cohesion and disintegration. This is invoked by the different materials: flexible paper, rigid cardboard, soft silk, rough linen, sturdy cotton and the many shades from bright white to unbleached transparent.
‘Fishes' was displayed at the "Symbols of faith" exhibition. The sign of Pisces represents the symbol for welcome, among others. In the three-part work the left and right part each contain three fish in the open (uncovered) warp. The centre part of open and woven areas maintains the tranquillity and connects left and right.
