Lammie Feijen, b. 1944

Feijen - Feijen Weefgetouw klLammie Feijen is a Dutch designer and weaver of gobelin tapestries. Her hand-woven gobelins are multicoloured (colourful) and mainly abstract. The tapestries are medium-sized to large. The dimensions of the wall hangings range from 59.06˝x39.37˝(150x100cm) to 78.74˝x55.19˝(200x140cm).

Lammie Feijen's gobelin tapestry studio is more than 15 years old.  It is located in an idyllic farmhouse with the playful name Feijenoord. This is where she designs and weaves her colourful tapestries in wool with a touch of silk, in panoramic peace. The design starts small as a pencil sketch, chalk drawing, collage, acrylic painting or computer image. Afterward, the outline of the design is transferred straight onto the warp. Weaving without the cartoon for guidance is technically difficult and requires a lot of concentration. At the same time, this method offers optimum freedom to the creative process.

Feijen's choice of designs is fed by personal experiences and impressions from her travels within and outside of Europe. The designs are usually translated into the abstract. Landscapes such as the Dolomites and Bryce Canyon are easily recognisable despite their semi-abstract depiction. In other gobelin tapestries, Lammie Feijen uses flowing lines (Atol, Opening, Stream) or she uses fanciful lines to express an idea (Creation). In addition, there are tapestries with geometric shapes (Fuga) and an almost faceted structure, for instance the  perspectivist rectangles in the tapestry called Air and water and the "ripped" strips of (paper) in Four seasons.

Lammie herself says she is mainly interested in the action of the colours. She uses the variety between light and dark and the differing intensity to create an illusion of movement and depth.
